MOREMeg Whitman Opposes High Speed Rail Project
Like her wealthy Atherton neighbors, Meg Whitman opposes progress on the high speed railway because, in the words of her campaign spokesperson, "the state cannot afford the costs associated with high-speed rail due to our current fiscal crisis." The fact that the project doesn't come out of the state's budget (it is funded largely by bonds already approved by California voters) suggests that she is concerned about the railway's effect on the property values of Atherton houses for sale. The bullet train is opposed by other nearby wealthy counties like Belmont, Palo Alto & Menlo Park, but surely this has nothing to do with the value of the houses in those real estate markets. Or does it? Meg Whitman's strange stance on the high speed rail project begs the question of whether she is more concerned with the value of Atherton homes for sale or the wishes of California's voters.
